What to do if a Guest Has an Allergic Reaction to Eyelash Extensions

Let's shoot it straight – at some point in your lashing career, chances are you will come across at least one guest who experiences a reaction to their eyelash extensions. We are here to break down everything you need to know to respond to this situation with confidence and professionalism. By educating yourself and your clients, you can prevent potential reactions, recognize the signs early, and manage reactions effectively. Let's break it all down so you’re prepared if and when this happens.
What causes Allergic Reactions?
An allergic reaction is the body’s way of responding when it comes in contact with a substance and can no longer tolerate it. Typically apparent 24 to 48 hours after a service, allergic reactions can last until the allergen is no longer present. The most common culprit behind allergic reactions to lash extensions isn't the extensions themselves, it's the adhesive! In particular, an ingredient called cyanoacrylate. This is the active ingredient in almost every lash adhesive on the market. While cyanoacrylate is generally safe, some clients may experience sensitivities.
Symptoms of an Allergic Reaction
Symptoms of an allergic reaction usually first start as something physical. Clients experiencing a reaction may show signs of redness, swelling, itching, or watery eyes. It’s important to distinguish between a true allergic reaction or a temporary irritation caused by the fumes, and/or incorrect gel pad or tape placement. While irritation often subsides quickly, an allergic reaction usually persists and may worsen over time. Remember, we are the lash professionals, not an eye doctor. Always recommend your client to seek professional help to ensure a safe and comfortable solution for your guest.
Reducing the Risk of Reactions
Let’s start at the beginning, the consultation! This is your opportunity to let your professionalism shine and to get to know each guest. Ask about their medical history, skin sensitivities, any known allergies, and their past experiences with lash extensions. If a guest knows they have sensitive eyes or have reacted from a previous lash set, performing a patch test before applying a full set can help identify potential allergies. While doing this isn't foolproof, it's a proactive step to ensure client safety and comfortability. We also recommend each guest remove their contact lenses before the service begins.
Like we always say, happy lashes are clean lashes! The importance of proper lash care plays a large factor in your guest’s experience. Starting and finishing each service with a lash bath will significantly lessen your guest’s chances of a reaction, all while showing them the ropes of how it is done at home.
The quality of the products that you use also plays a role in the potential reactions your guests could experience. Using a high-quality adhesive, such as Borboleta’s Go-To Adhesive, that is free of harsh ingredients like petrochemicals, latex, or formaldehyde, guarantees you won't have to compromise the performance of the adhesive.
The last important point to hit on in reducing the risk of reactions is your environment! Make sure your lashing space is well-ventilated, using air purifiers, humidifiers, or de-humidifiers (depending on where you are located) so the adhesive can perform its best and cure properly. Using a nano mister throughout the appointment can help minimize exposure to fumes, making each guest as comfortable as possible throughout the entirety of the service.

Immediate Steps To Take if a Reaction Occurs During or After Application
First and foremost, stay calm and assess the situation. If a guest expresses physical discomfort during or after the appointment, ask about their symptoms and evaluate whether it’s a mild reaction or something more serious. Signs of swelling and/or redness around the eye area, during the lash appointment, are signs to listen to! Stop lashing and cleanse your guest's lashes and lids to help prevent the reaction from worsening. If the symptoms persist, an over-the-counter allergy medicine like Zyrtec or Benadryl blocks the histamine release and can help alleviate the swelling or pain.
If the reaction does not subside after 24-48 hours, a full removal of the lash extensions may be necessary. Gently remove the lash extensions using Borboleta’s Gel Adhesive Remover and don't forget to wash the guest’s lashes and eye area before AND after the removal. Avoid pulling or tugging on the natural lashes as it can exacerbate the irritation.
When to Seek Medical Attention
At the end of the day, we are not eye doctors and we must protect ourselves and our guest’s health. If the reaction is severe and swelling spreads beyond the eye area, and/or their pain persists, guests should seek medical attention immediately. Medications can help alleviate symptoms and put your guest at ease.
Educating Clients for Future Appointments
We all know that lash extension guests are the most loyal, but if a reaction to the service is present, you and your clients should know their future options. Depending on the level of reaction, guests might need to take a break from lash extensions. Having other services on your service menu, such as Lash Lifts, is a great alternative for these guests. Borboleta’s Lash Serum is also the perfect product recommendation that can help ease the transition. Their health and safety should always come first and being upfront about this situation builds trust and credibility between you and your community.
Allergic reactions to lash extensions are rare but can happen! By taking these preventative steps, recognizing the signs, and acting swiftly, you can ensure your guests feel heard, safe, and supported. Remember, education and communication are key to managing these situations effectively. Always prioritize safety, and you’ll build a loyal clientele that loves coming back for more.
